About the Project

Pendulum Drift stands as one of the most remarkable debut features in recent British and independent cinema — a singular, defiant work forged through extraordinary personal and artistic commitment.

Shot in just five intense nights in April 2010 beneath the apocalyptic ash clouds of the Eyjafjallajökull volcanic eruption, the film was created using the experimental 7-Stage Adaptive Method that Shehzad Afzal developed in his award-winning 2009 Master’s dissertation at Edinburgh Napier University. What began as an experimental project was later upscaled into a full feature, all while operating completely outside traditional funding structures.

Self-funded through extreme personal sacrifice — including remortgaging his home and serving in the British Army Reserves at the age of 48 — Afzal not only wrote, directed, and produced the film, but also carried the vast majority of post-production single-handedly over a staggering 17-year period. His son Shaahan composed the haunting original piano score, culminating in the emotionally devastating final track “The End of Everything.”

The result is Mustard-Noir cinema at its most potent: a raw, neon-drenched ensemble drama that blends Cassavetes-style intensity with a fixed-gaze, Deleuzian time-image aesthetic. Pendulum Drift completes a powerful 20-year cinematic trilogy that includes The Full 10 Yards (2005) and Bo Kata (2007) — the latter widely regarded as the definitive cinematic portrait of Lahore’s Basant Kite Festival before its ban. Together, these three films form a coherent exploration of resistance, cultural erasure, and colonial decay.

With its deliberate rhythmic structure, powerful ensemble performances, and unflinching examination of fragile masculinity, false families, and economic desperation, Pendulum Drift refuses to sanitise or simplify. It is polished to be unpolished — imperfect by design, yet deeply alive. Already, the film has achieved significant early validation, winning 10 awards across three countries and three different juries, including multiple wins for Best Feature Film, Best Director, Best Editing, Best Sound Design, Best Original Score, and Special Mention for Production.

In an era dominated by institutional pathways and market-tested filmmaking, Pendulum Drift stands as a bold declaration of sovereign cinema. It proves that extraordinary work can still emerge from the margins through discipline, vision, and an anti-fragile approach. This is not just a debut feature — it is the hard-won culmination of a 17-year artistic and personal odyssey that challenges how independent films are made, valued, and remembered.

Pendulum Drift

Director Statement

The seeds of inspiration were already sewed upon completing my masters dissertation in 2009, which looked at developing scripts and feature films using sustainable filmmaking methods. This led me to further consolidate my research which I had undertaken at Screen Academy Scotland, Edinburgh.

With 'Pendulum Drift', I’m drawing from the diverse influences of my previous works—from the grit of social realism in 'Bo Kata', to the neo-noir sensibilities of my earlier projects. This feature film is not only a culmination of my filmmaking evolution but also a chance to push the boundaries of storytelling in exciting and bold new ways.

Fittingly I had a feature film idea which would be a suitable candidate to allow me to prove my research and methods to advance eco-friendly and sustainable filmmaking. Pendulum Drift, a feature film which contained the right ingredients for such a venture, would allow me to innovate and develop my filmmaking process and methods, The Anti-Fragile Production Paradigm (AFPP) & Decolonial Creative Operating System (DCOS), to ultimately take the art of filmmaking forward in exciting new ways.

I created Pendulum Drift as a cinematic portrait of colonial decay, using a new film language called Pendulum Cinema to explore how the past continues to haunt the present. The film oscillates between the raw realities of neorealism, the political critique of Third Cinema, and the a-temporal experience of the Deleuzian time-image. This is pure cinema off a cliff edge.

Filming a feature-length film in 5 consecutive nights was a bold experiment that pushed the boundaries of storytelling and performance. The compressed timeline allowed for a raw, real-time experience, capturing a sense of urgency that’s impossible to replicate in traditional, longer production schedules.

Production Details

Privately self financed and produced. Developed through innovative filmmaking processes, culminating in a sustainable and Eco-friendly approach to film production.

The Green agenda is at the heart of the production process which aims to reduce the environmental impact of filmmaking.

The feature film, 'Pendulum Drift' was born of patience, persistence, and an unyielding love for storytelling. This film’s completion reflects a decade-long journey—both personal and artistic—of balancing family, resilience, and a return to the art form that grounds me. At its core, 'Pendulum Drift' is a story of endurance, revealing how time tests our resolve.

Pendulum Drift was shot near Glasgow, Scotland during April 2010 (18th - 22nd). This was all happening under the 'cloud' of the Icelandic Volcano eruption (Longitudinal Stress-Test Data), and with a complete air travel ban in place, it was the First Empirical Validation of the Anti-Fragile Production Paradigm (AFPP) and Decolonial Creative Operating System (DCOS).

Due to unforeseen personal circumstances the film had to be parked for a number of years. Post-Production was finally completed late 2025. Mission Complete.
